Marvel: “To be filled with wonder or astonishment.”
I believe that SCIENCE and FUN are two words that God intended to go together.
I ALSO BELIEVE THE GOAL OF SCIENCE IS TO MARVEL!
As a young person I never thought about science at all, except to pass classes. There was very little interest. When I became a Christian on a backpacking trip there was an immediate revelation of God as the Creator of all! There was a drawing power in nature. The mountains spoke of majesty; there was life and a closeness with God I felt when out in His creation. A friend introduced me to studying DNA, He showed me how the 4 chemical letters found on the twisted molecule are a code of information to spell out the instructions for making proteins. I learned that the instructions for making one protein averages around 1,000 pieces of information, which must be arranged in perfect order. To think that all that I knew of nature from the smooth skin of a dolphin, to the chameleon’s ability to change colors, to 107 million rods and cones in our eyes, to the sonar of bats, was a result of God placing information on the DNA molecule, just like a typesetter preparing blocks of letters to print a page. “Wow, God wrote His greatest creations on the DNA molecule!”
We all love moments of awe, when we enter into an experience where we’re captivated by a phenomenon that causes everything else in life to seem far away. My goal in teaching science is to provide opportunities where students and families can experience that sense of awe. I would love for their hearts to be captured by the wonders of science, and then to reflect on the One who created it all.
Wonder need not be reserved for God but it must be that our wonder finds its greatest realization in God’s work. For who is greater, the one who builds, or the One who has built the builder?
